Essential tools for your lawn and garden

Whether you are a serious horticulturist, a weekend gardener, or someone whose thumbs are every color except green, here is our recommended list of essential garden tools to keep your garden growing: rake, hand trowel, pruners, dutch hoe, pruning saw, shears, garden hose, wheelbarrow, loppers, and an edger. Have a question? Stop by our [garden center] where our caring and knowledgable Mayfield’s staff will help you choose the best tools for your project.

How often should you water your vegetable garden?

In general we recommend one inch of water per week. However, in hot weather, vegetables need more water depending on the average daily temperature. To determine the average daily temperature, add the daily high and the daily low and divide the sum by 2. For every 10 degrees above 60 degrees, add another 1/2 inch of water to your weekly one inch watering routine. Still not sure? Stop by our [garden center] where the caring and knowledgable Mayfield’s staff will answer all your watering questions.

Best choice perennials for the Midwest

A beautiful midwest garden that will come back year after year with virtually no attention is possible. We recommend using perennial flowers that will thrive in our Midwest climate. A few of these are: Black-eyed Susans, Coneflowers, Allium, Butterfly Weed, Sedums, Aromatic Aster, Russian Sage, Hardy Geraniums and Virginia Bluebells.
